Reps Member Ikwechegh Apologizes for Assaulting Cab Driver

Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, the House of Representatives member for Aba North and Aba South, Abia State, has issued a public apology after assaulting an e-hailing driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, at his Maitama, Abuja residence. The incident occurred on Sunday, and a video recording of the encounter quickly gained attention online.

In his apology statement, Ikwechegh acknowledged that his behavior fell short of the expectations of public office. “As a public servant, I recognise the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people,” he stated. “My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry”.

Ikwechegh expressed regret for the harm and embarrassment caused to Abuwatseya, his constituents, and the public. He confirmed cooperation with the Nigerian Police investigation and pledged support for ensuring accountability.

The apology comes after widespread condemnation of Ikwechegh’s actions, with many calling for punishment beyond a simple apology. Critics argue that his behavior demonstrates a pattern of entitlement and abuse of power.

In response to the backlash, Ikwechegh announced plans to seek professional counseling and engage in community service initiatives promoting respect, empathy, and understanding.
