The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) crisis has taken a new turn as the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has urged the factional acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, to revert to the status quo. This development comes ahead of an emergency meeting called by the PDP Governors Forum on Monday to discuss the party’s future.
The meeting is aimed at addressing the ongoing crisis, which has been exacerbated by Damagum’s leadership. Since taking over as acting National Chairman following Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s court removal, Damagum has faced criticism from party leaders, leading to calls for his resignation.
Damagum’s indecisiveness has contributed to the tense political situation in Rivers State between Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. On Friday, Damagum’s faction of the NWC announced the suspension of National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN) for alleged insubordination and anti-party activities.
However, in a surprising twist, Ologunagba responded by suspending Damagum and National Secretary Sen. Samuel Anyanwu for alleged disloyalty to the PDP, appointing National Treasurer Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the acting National Chairman.
Sources reveal that PDP stakeholders are considering establishing a caretaker committee to guide the party toward a National Convention to elect a new National Working Committee. This move aims to address the party’s internal conflicts and chart a new course.
As the PDP crisis continues to unfold, Monday’s emergency meeting will be crucial in determining the party’s future direction. Will the governors be able to find a resolution, or will the crisis deepen? Only time will tell.
