The Anambra State Government has initiated a probe into the alleged murder of Mrs. Ogechukwu Okafor by her husband, Mr. Elijah Emeka Ibeabuchi. The incident occurred on August 13, 2024, in Nimo community, Njikoka Local Government Area. The deceased’s family reported the incident to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare, citing suspicious behavior from the husband.
According to Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, media aide to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, “The deceased uncle, Mr. Samuel Onuorah, from Abatete community, who led the family member to lay the complaint at the ministry, alleged that he got a call from her late niece’s husband that her niece, Ogechukwu, fell from a four-storey building and died.”
However, upon visiting the mortuary, the family discovered that Ogechukwu’s body showed no signs of falling from a building, contradicting the husband’s claim. Commissioner Ify Obinabo has called on stakeholders, women groups, human rights activists, and social media users to support the state government in ensuring justice for the deceased.
Obinabo vowed that the state government would thoroughly investigate the incident, stating, “He further revealed that their doubts were cleared after they went to the mortuary where the said husband had deposited their daughter’s corpse and saw evidently that she didn’t fall from any storey building as claimed by the husband.” She also promised to notify the state governor, ensuring that the matter receives attention and the deceased receives justice.
