The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its readiness to support former President Goodluck Jonathan if he decides to run for president in 2027. This endorsement comes despite the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, still being in the picture.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, stated that the party aligns with the views of Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, and northern elites who are calling for Jonathan’s return to the presidency. Abdullahi praised Jonathan’s leadership style, citing his willingness to concede defeat in the 2015 presidential election and his ability to stabilize the economy during his tenure.
Abdullahi dismissed concerns about Atiku Abubakar’s potential opposition, emphasizing that the party cannot be dictated by one person. He noted that the PDP has tried with Atiku in the past and may consider another candidate if the circumstances favor them.
The PDP’s support for Jonathan’s potential bid highlights the party’s desire for a nationalist candidate who can address the country’s current challenges, which have gone beyond party lines. Jonathan’s past achievements, including stabilizing the forex and achieving single-digit inflation, make him an attractive option for the PDP in 2027.
