INEC CONFIRMS DEATH OF OGUN STATE RESIDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSIONER, OLANIYI IJALAYE

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the death of Mr. Olaniyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun State. According to a statement issued by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Ijalaye passed away on Monday, August 19, 2024, after attending a meeting at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Earlier reports by SaharaReporters indicated that Mr. Ijalaye slumped and died in his hotel room shortly after the meeting. The cause of his death has not been officially disclosed.

Mr. Ijalaye, born in 1958, was a graduate of Law from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1983. He also obtained a Master’s degree in Law from the same university in 1995.

INEC described Mr. Ijalaye as a hard-working and conscientious officer who worked with integrity. He assumed duty as REC for Ogun State on February 23, 2022.

The Commission extends its heartfelt condolences to his immediate family and prays that God grants him eternal rest.
