Salihu Tanko Yakasai, a former media aide to ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, has shed light on why some Northerners are waving Russian flags during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria.
The protests, which began on August 1, aim to express dissatisfaction with the country’s economic situation and food inflation.
However, in some Northern regions, protesters have been seen displaying Russian flags, sparking curiosity.
According to Yakasai, the protesters are using the flags to grab the federal government’s attention, having been inspired by reports of similar situations in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
Yakasai expressed concern that this move might inadvertently attract unwanted attention from external forces.
Meanwhile, the Russian Embassy in Nigeria has disassociated itself from the protesters, stating that their actions do not reflect any official Russian government policy or position.
