Abuja, Nigeria – The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has called on Nigeria’s economic managers to take immediate action to prevent further protests and address the demands of the protesting youths. In a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the organization commended President Bola Tinubu for his nationwide broadcast on Sunday but emphasized the need for alternative solutions to end the demonstrations.
The statement noted that there is still a tense atmosphere due to the threat of another anti-hunger nationwide protest between August 5th and 10th, 2024. Ohanaeze urged President Tinubu to consider reducing fuel prices or offering other tangible concessions to pacify the protesters and their sponsors.
The organization expressed concern that the protesters, along with their local and international backers, are strategizing for more chaotic and violent protests, particularly in the North, South-West, and Niger Delta regions. Ohanaeze stressed that swift action is necessary to quell the ongoing protests and prevent further escalation.
