Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has said that the newly enacted minimum wage law applies to all employers, regardless of their business or sector, emphasizing that no one is exempt from complying with the new benchmark of 70,000.
Akpabio stated that the law’s scope is universal, covering all forms of employment, including domestic staff.
“If you have a housemaid, a gateman, or any other domestic staff, you cannot pay them below 70,000. This law is non-negotiable and applies to everyone,” he said.
The Senate President’s clarification comes as the new minimum wage law takes effect, mandating employers to adjust their payroll accordingly.
The law, which was passed by the National Assembly and assented to by President Bola Tinubu, is renewable every three years.
With this development, all employers are expected to comply with the new minimum wage requirement, ensuring fair compensation for their employees.
