A middle-aged man, Shaibu Alhaji Yushau, climbed a high broadband mast in Jatampe, Abuja, in a suicide attempt. He was taken into custody by the FCT Police Command and sent for mental evaluation at the Social Development Secretariat (SDS). The evaluation will determine his state of mind at the time of the incident.
Eyewitnesses reported that Yushau scaled the mast, causing widespread panic and alarm among residents and passersby. The police were alerted, and a team of officers was dispatched to persuade him to come down.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, “The suspect, if found to be mentally stable after the test, will be charged in court for attempted suicide, disturbance of public peace, and incitement in accordance with sections 241, 111, and 114 of the Penal Code Act.”
The Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Ife, urged residents to be law-abiding while pushing to have their voices heard, emphasizing that the police will not be stampeded into allowing the breakdown of law and order.
