Commuters were stranded and vehicular movement was hampered on the Benin/Ore highway today as students of the University of Benin protested a power outage on the institution’s campuses. The university has been unable to reach an agreement with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company over a significant increase in electricity billing, from N80 million to N280 million monthly.
The students, who carried placards and chanted slogans, demanded a solution to the power outage, which has resulted in only one hour of electricity daily, hindering their studies.
The university management has resorted to alternative power generators and rationing on the two campuses.
