South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday announced that opposition leader John Steenhuisen will serve as Minister of Agriculture in his new government.
Ramaphosa, re-elected for a second term, will lead a “government of national unity” after the African National Congress lost its majority in the May election.
“The minister of agriculture is John Steenhuisen,” Ramaphosa said in a televised address.
The opposition coalition will hold 12 out of 32 ministries, with the largest opposition party winning six ministries, including education and environment.
The African National Congress will retain 20 ministries, including finance, foreign affairs, energy, and defence.
