In a major breakthrough, the Kenya Police Service has arrested Nadeem Anjarwalla, a high-ranking executive of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, who had been on the run since escaping from Nigerian custody in March.
Anjarwalla, who faces charges of tax evasion, currency speculation, and money laundering to the tune of $35.4 million, was apprehended by Kenyan authorities in collaboration with the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL).
According to sources, Anjarwalla had been using a concealed Kenyan passport to evade detection and was traced to Kenya through a joint effort by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the International Criminal Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Kenyan Police Service.
The extradition process is currently underway, and Anjarwalla is expected to be returned to Nigeria within the week to face trial.
This development comes after another Binance executive, Tigran Gambaryan, was detained alongside Anjarwalla in February and pleaded not guilty to money laundering charges.
The arrest and impending extradition of Anjarwalla mark a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to combat financial crimes and bring fugitives to justice.
