Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District, publicly apologized to the immediate past Senator representing Edo South Senatorial District, Matthew Urhoghide, for treating him unfairly during his first stint in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The former Edo State governor made this heartfelt apology while welcoming Urhoghide and other decampees into the APC in Benin, Edo State. Oshiomhole admitted that one of his biggest mistakes was supporting Senator Ehigie Uzamere against Urhoghide’s candidacy, which ultimately led to the party losing Edo South to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) twice.
In his statement, Oshiomhole expressed regret and shouldered the blame, saying, “I was wrongly advised. I am not going to blame those who mislead me, but I accept the responsibility that I took the decision to support former Senator Uzamere. The late Esongban of Benin Kingdom, Chief David Edebiri, told me, my son, you made a mistake.”
Oshiomhole humbly acknowledged the opinions of others who also cautioned against his decision, stating, “There are several others who spoke in the same vein. Urhoghide also came to me and said, ‘Comrade, this your decision to support someone else against me, I pray and believe that you will regret it sooner than later.'”
This unexpected apology from Oshiomhole has raised eyebrows and garnered attention from political pundits and the public alike. Many see this as a significant step towards reconciliation within the APC and a willingness to rectify past mistakes.
Matthew Urhoghide, who was deeply moved by Oshiomhole’s apology, expressed his appreciation and acceptance, emphasizing the importance of unity and progress within the party and for the constituents of Edo South Senatorial District.
As the political landscape in Edo State continues to evolve, all eyes are now on how this public apology will impact the political dynamics, particularly within the APC. Can this act of contrition pave the way for future cooperation and collaboration among party members? Only time will tell.
