The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the names and particulars of the candidates and their deputies from 17 political parties set to participate in the upcoming Edo State gubernatorial elections on September 21st. However, one notable exclusion from the list is Dr. Dennis Osahon Aikoriogie, the candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM).
The NRM state chairman, who led a protest at the INEC state secretariat, expressed disappointment over the omission of Dr. Dennis Osahon Aikoriogie’s name, claiming that the party had followed due process during the electoral selection process, which was duly monitored by the commission.
According to the chairman, the NRM had submitted all required documentation and met the necessary criteria for candidacy, making the exclusion even more puzzling. He further emphasized that the party followed the proper electionaly process and complied with all INEC guidelines.
The decision by INEC to exclude Dr. Dennis Osahon Aikoriogie’s candidacy has raised concerns among NRM party members and supporters. They argue that this move represents a potential infringement on the democratic principles of equal participation and fair representation in the electoral process.
The INEC officials said the party did not informed the commission which is false as the party duly informed the commission and NRM was amongst the parties listed to conduct Edo Guber primaries.
However, the commission has faced similar criticisms in the past, and it remains to be seen how this decision will be resolved. The commission is yet to make an official statement concerning the issue.
Commenting on the situation, political analysts highlight that such controversies can undermine public confidence in the electoral process and stress the importance of transparency and impartiality in ensuring free and fair elections.
As the gubernatorial elections in Edo State draw nearer, it is anticipated that further developments in this matter will occur, potentially influencing the dynamics of the political landscape in the state. INEC is expected to address the concerns raised by the NRM and provide clarification on the exclusion of its candidate, Dr. Dennis Osahon Aikoriogie, to ensure a smooth and credible electoral process.
