University Lecturers, ASUU Joins Nationwide Strike Declared By Nigeria Labour Congress, TUC

ASUU’s decision to join the nationwide strike comes as a result of the failure of the federal government to meet the demands of the union. ASUU had been engaged in negotiations with the government over issues such as the payment of salaries, earned allowances, and the revitalization of the education sector. However, these negotiations have been largely unfruitful, prompting the union to take this course of action.

The strike, which is set to commence at midnight, will see university lecturers across the country suspending all academic activities indefinitely. This will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the education sector, as universities will come to a standstill.

In the circular, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke lamented the government’s lack of commitment to addressing the challenges facing the education sector. He criticized the government for its failure to implement agreements reached in previous negotiations and expressed disappointment in the authorities’ unwillingness to prioritize the welfare of university lecturers and the overall development of the education system.

The decision to join the strike was made after a series of consultations among ASUU members across various universities. The union has called on its members to fully comply with the strike action and remain resolute until their demands are met.

This development comes on the heels of the nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). The NLC and TUC have been championing the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers, demanding better wages, improved working conditions, and the implementation of labor laws.

The combined action of ASUU, NLC, and TUC is expected to put significant pressure on the government to address the concerns of workers and improve the welfare of the Nigerian people as a whole. As the strike commences, it remains to be seen how the government will respond and whether negotiations can be resumed to find a lasting solution to the issues at hand.
