In response to the recent arrest of 69 suspected internet fraudsters by operatives of the Ibadan zonal command in Ile-Ife, Osun state, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially declared a ban on nighttime sting operations. This directive was disclosed by Dele Oyewale, the Head of Media & Publicity at the EFCC, in a statement released on November 1, 2023.
The controversial arrests of these individuals, which caught nationwide attention, led to a public outcry, with the hashtag #FreeOAUStudents trending on social media platforms. Acknowledging this outrage, the EFCC has taken decisive action to prevent further incidents that may undermine its reputation and mandate.
The statement revealed that the ban on nighttime sting operations was communicated by the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede. The decision was made to address the concerns raised regarding the recent arrest in Ile-Ife and its impact on innocent individuals.
As a result of this directive, the EFCC has also taken steps to ensure the prompt release of several students who were apprehended during the operation, after undergoing necessary profiling procedures. This move aims to rectify any wrongful detention or targeting of innocent individuals while still allowing the EFCC to carry out its crucial mandate of combating economic and financial crimes.
The EFCC’s decision to ban nighttime sting operations reflects a commitment to upholding justice, fairness, and respect for the rights of individuals. It underscores the importance of striking a balance between curbing illegal activities and safeguarding the rights of innocent citizens.
This development is expected to restore public confidence in the EFCC’s operations and provide a strong foundation for effective collaboration and support from stakeholders in the fight against economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.
