Tragedy struck at Egbu Umuenem, Otolo Nnewi in Nnewi North local government area of Anambra State as a Man identified as Chizoba Aniefuna and his two sons lost their lives after their one storey building collapsed.
A relation of Chizoba who was also trapped in the building which was still under construction, was also rescued and rushed to St. Felix Hospital, Nnewi where he is receiving treatment.
Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN officials and the Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North LGA, Mr. Chris Obiora, visited the scene of the debris.
The Anambra State Chairman of COREN, Engr. Victor Meju while speaking to newsmen attributed the incident to poor foundation, poor concrete mixture, poor quality of materials, poor wearing cost capacity, nonconformity to standard and non approval from relevant regulatory authorities.
Meju also directed the cordoning off of the site, noting that the owner of the building, Mr. Chukwunafu Anamanjo would be invited for questioning to assist in investigation.
Nnewi North Local Government Transition Committee Chairman. Obiora, on his part urged the general public to always make use of certified Engineers and other relevant personnel in the building sector, noting that monitoring teams were also important to ensure that the standards were strictly adhered to.
