Taiwan Insists on Sovereignty After Trump’s Warning Against Formal Independence

Taiwan has reiterated that it is an independent nation despite renewed tensions with China over the island’s political status.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry made the declaration in a statement issued on Saturday, insisting that the island remains a sovereign democratic state not subject to Beijing’s authority.

“Taiwan is a sovereign and independent democratic nation, and is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China,” the ministry stated.

The statement came hours after Donald Trump reportedly warned Taiwan against making any formal declaration of independence.

According to the ministry, since Trump returned to office, the United States has repeatedly maintained that its policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged.

The latest remarks further highlight the long-standing dispute between China and Taiwan over the island’s sovereignty and political future.

China has consistently maintained that Taiwan is not a sovereign nation but an inseparable part of Chinese territory under the “One China” principle.

Reacting to recent developments, Dong Hairong, Counselor at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria, said the situation surrounding Taiwan underscored the need for greater international understanding of the Taiwan question and China’s territorial position.

Beijing has repeatedly opposed any move that could suggest international recognition of Taiwan as an independent state, warning that such actions threaten regional stability and violate its sovereignty claims.
