A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has alleged that the incarceration of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, contributed to the death of the ex-governor’s mother.
Okonkwo made the claim while reacting to the recent developments surrounding El-Rufai’s legal troubles, stating that the emotional and psychological toll of the detention on the family may have played a role in the tragic loss.
It would be recalled that the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) had earlier detained El-Rufai over allegations of corruption during his time in office as governor of Kaduna State. The circumstances surrounding the investigation and detention have continued to generate mixed reactions from political stakeholders and the public.
While Okonkwo’s remarks have sparked debate, there has been no official confirmation linking the former governor’s detention directly to his mother’s death. Analysts note that such claims remain speculative and highlight the need for sensitivity when addressing issues involving bereavement.
As of the time of filing this report, neither El-Rufai nor his family had issued a formal response to the allegation.
