The former Governor of Kano State and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect.
Kwankwaso made this known in a press statement dated March 29, 2026, stating that his decision was driven by the need for a strategic political realignment in response to the evolving dynamics of Nigeria’s political landscape.
According to the statement, the former NNPP flagbearer said the move followed careful consideration of current political developments across the country. He noted that the changing nature of alliances and policy directions among political actors necessitated a reassessment of his position within the party.
While he did not immediately disclose his next political destination, Kwankwaso emphasized his continued commitment to contributing to Nigeria’s democratic growth and national development.
His resignation is expected to have significant implications for the NNPP and the broader political environment ahead of future elections, particularly given his influence and strong support base, especially in northern Nigeria.
