Kano Deputy Governor Resigns Amid Impeachment Pressure, Denies Allegations

The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has resigned from office following mounting pressure from an impeachment move initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly.

According to a statement issued by the Kwankwasiyya Movement through its spokesperson, Habibu Sale Mohammad, the decision was taken in the interest of maintaining stability and ensuring smooth governance in the state.

The statement emphasized that Gwarzo’s resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of the allegations levelled against him by lawmakers. Instead, it described the move as an act of statesmanship aimed at reducing political tension and allowing governance to continue without disruption.

Gwarzo, who maintains his innocence, said his record in public service reflects his integrity and commitment. He also signalled plans to focus on strengthening the Kwankwasiyya Movement and repositioning it ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Before stepping down, the deputy governor had approached the Federal High Court in Kano seeking to stop the impeachment process. However, the court declined to grant his request, ruling that he failed to meet the requirements for an interim injunction. The case was subsequently adjourned to April 16, 2026.

The impeachment notice, backed by 38 lawmakers—mostly from the All Progressives Congress with support from two members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party—was issued in line with Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution.

Lawmakers accused Gwarzo of financial misconduct, including allegedly receiving monthly kickbacks from the state’s 44 local government councils and mismanaging funds under the guise of special assignments. He was also accused of authorizing the release of hundreds of millions of naira to a pharmaceutical company in violation of procurement laws.

Despite the allegations, Gwarzo insists his resignation is solely to preserve peace and political stability in Kano State.
