Kano Governor Meets Tinubu in Closed-Door Talks Amid Defection Rumours

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Monday held a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, amid growing speculation about a possible political defection.

The closed-door engagement, which took place in the President’s office without media access, has further intensified conjecture over the motive and potential outcome of the visit. Governor Yusuf reportedly arrived at the Villa around 4:10 p.m., clad in a white agbada and a red cap.

As of the time of filing this report, details of the discussions remain unclear.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of sustained rumours that the Kano governor may be considering a move from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Political watchers say negotiations around the alleged defection have been ongoing for several weeks but may have stalled due to unresolved issues, including whether Governor Yusuf would be guaranteed an automatic ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The speculation has also reportedly heightened political tensions in Kano State, fuelling divisions between Yusuf’s supporters and loyalists of his political benefactor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a prominent NNPP figure.

While neither the Presidency nor the Kano State Government has released an official statement, analysts believe the meeting with President Tinubu is likely linked to the governor’s reported political realignment and broader calculations ahead of the 2027 polls.
