The Edo State Government announced on Wednesday that all 38 students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, who were detained over last weekend’s protest, will be freed. Some students were released on Tuesday, while the remainder were scheduled for release on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, told Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
“We worked late into the night, until 1 a.m., to secure the release of the students,” Iyamu said.
The commissioner added that the unrest was instigated by individuals living outside Edo, which led to property destruction. He recalled that a previous protest on May 13, 2025, had been peaceful, with demonstrators meeting the governor without incident. He emphasized that while citizens can express grievances, violent actions such as property damage and breaking into the king’s palace are unacceptable.
Iyamu also confirmed that with peace restored, the government has approved the resumption of academic activities. Students are expected back on Monday, with the government and security agencies working to maintain calm in the area.
