BREAKING: Two Rivers Lawmakers Backtrack on Fubara Impeachment Move

Two members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have withdrawn their support for the planned impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.

The Minority Leader and lawmaker representing Omuma State Constituency, Sylvanus Nwankwo, alongside Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency, announced their change of position at a press conference in Port Harcourt on Monday.

The lawmakers appealed to the Assembly to reconsider the impeachment process, saying their decision followed interventions from elders and leaders within and outside the state, who urged restraint.

According to them, the impeachment notice had already been issued against Governor Fubara and his deputy, but they are now calling on their colleagues to show mercy and explore alternative ways of resolving the matter.

“We appeal to our fellow lawmakers to temper justice with mercy and see how this issue can be resolved without resorting to impeachment,” they said. “After listening to numerous appeals from our elders and leaders, we are pleading with our colleagues to retrace our steps and seek an amicable resolution, even though the governor and his deputy may have infringed on the Constitution.”

DAILY POST reports that Governor Fubara and his deputy were served impeachment notices last Thursday over allegations of gross misconduct.
