A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has warned that a divided opposition—particularly a split between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi—could give President Bola Tinubu a significant advantage in the 2027 presidential election.
Momodu recalled that Atiku and Obi finished second and third, respectively, in the 2023 polls, cautioning against a repeat of such fragmentation. Writing on X, he noted Atiku’s long-standing and consistent pursuit of the presidency, stressing that unity among opposition forces could be decisive.
“With history, structure and voter energy all in play, unity matters,” Momodu said, adding that division could once again shape the outcome of the election.
He contrasted Atiku’s persistence with former President Muhammadu Buhari’s earlier electoral losses, describing Atiku’s resilience as admirable. “Atiku has always been closer to the destination and never gave up,” he said.
Momodu argued that splitting Atiku and Obi again would “instantly give Tinubu an advantage,” noting the energy Obi has generated among his supporters and the robust political structures Atiku has built over decades, dating back to his role in the 1993 SDP primaries when he stepped down for Chief Moshood Abiola.
According to him, a united opposition combining Obi’s grassroots momentum with Atiku’s experience and nationwide structure would pose a formidable challenge in 2027.
