The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned the driver of a Lexus SUV involved in the road accident that claimed the lives of two associates of heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua.
The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was brought before a Magistrate Court in Sagamu Local Government Area on Friday, January 2, 2026, where he was formally charged in connection with the fatal crash.
Confirming the development, the police said Kayode was docked on four counts bordering on dangerous and negligent driving. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the charges include dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily harm and property damage, as well as driving without a valid National Driver’s Licence. All charges are under relevant sections of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.
The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties, but ordered that he be remanded in custody pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions.
The accident occurred on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while Kayode was driving Joshua and two of his friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. The Lexus SUV reportedly crashed into a stationary truck, killing Ayodele and Ghami on the spot. Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries.
Anthony Joshua was discharged from the hospital late Wednesday after doctors confirmed he was clinically stable. Reports also indicate that the former world heavyweight champion, accompanied by his mother, visited a Lagos funeral home to pay his last respects to the deceased, whose bodies were being prepared for repatriation.
