The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to significantly increase investment in renewable energy in 2026, as part of efforts to consolidate recent milestones and expand access to clean, affordable, and reliable power supply across the country.
The Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, made this known in a statement, noting that the government’s renewed focus on renewable energy is aimed at addressing Nigeria’s persistent power supply challenges, particularly in unserved and underserved communities.
Dr. Abdullahi acknowledged the strong support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in accelerating the implementation of key energy reforms, which he said have catalysed investment in the renewable energy sub-sector. According to him, these reforms are positioning Nigeria strategically as Africa’s emerging renewable energy hub.
He explained that renewable energy has been identified and adopted by the Federal Government as a viable alternative source of power supply, especially for rural and hard-to-reach communities that remain outside the national grid.
The ECN Director-General further disclosed that the Energy Commission of Nigeria is serving as the implementing agency for the Renewed Hope Solarization Programme and other interventions aimed at achieving energy efficiency nationwide.
He restated the Commission’s commitment to unlocking opportunities across the renewable energy value chain, noting that the initiative will drive job creation, promote sustainable development, and improve energy access for all Nigerians.
Dr. Abdullahi also assured that more communities have been mapped out for solar connections, as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to deepen renewable energy penetration and enhance national energy security.
