Abia State Governor Alex Otti has confirmed his safety after yet-to-be-identified gunmen ambushed his advance security convoy in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred near the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, and saw three people attached to the Governor’s security detail targeted by the fleeing attackers.
The Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, quickly released a statement shortly after the incident to address the attack and confirm the Governor’s status.
“The Governor was not part of the convoy attacked,” the spokesperson confirmed to Hobnob News, stressing that Governor Otti was safe and unharmed.
It was gathered that the fleeing gunmen launched the attack while the advance convoy was heading toward the Airport in Owerri.
The ambush highlights persistent security challenges in the South-East region, underscoring the dangers faced by high-profile political figures and their security details traveling between states. Security agencies in Imo State are expected to launch an immediate investigation into the attack.
