Lagos State Police Command has intervened to halt plans for an unapproved Egungun festival in Oregun, warning that any activities threatening public peace or safety will not be tolerated. Twelve suspects have been arrested in connection with circulating handbills and posters on social media attributed to the “OJE PARAPO OF OREGUN.” The materials reportedly sought to restrict residents’ freedom of movement, expression, and dignity.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, directed the suspension of the festival, citing concerns that it could lead to public disorder and insecurity. He stressed that no group has the right to take the law into its own hands or prevent others from moving freely within the state.
CP Jimoh warned that any unauthorized gatherings or events capable of disrupting public peace would be met with the full force of the law. The 27th and 28th November 2025 festival, as advertised, has been officially prohibited following widespread fear and apprehension among residents.
A similar incident occurred on 23rd November 2025 in Mafoluku, Oshodi, where publications attempting to incite public disturbance led to the arrest of 12 suspects, who are currently under investigation and will face prosecution upon completion.
The Commissioner emphasized that the Oje Parapo of Oregun must desist from holding the festival, noting that security for the event can no longer be guaranteed and that residents’ safety and peace are paramount.
