A massive fire on Sunday afternoon, November 2, 2025, destroyed a large rice farm in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State. The blaze, allegedly set by suspected herdsmen, razed several hectares of cultivated land, including both standing crops and harvested rice stored for threshing.
The affected farm, owned by Mr. Ugbakayaa, is located at Tse Orbiam along the Naka–Makurdi road. Eyewitness Ado Bartholomew said the flames spread quickly and reduced the entire field to ashes within minutes, describing it as a devastating loss for the family whose livelihood depended on the rice production.
Residents who visited the scene decried the repeated attacks on farmers and the worsening insecurity that has disrupted agriculture in Benue State. They urged the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to safeguard farmers in Gwer West and other rural communities facing similar violence.
Security authorities had not released an official statement on the incident at the time of this report.
