John Nwosu, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for the Anambra governorship election, has sworn an affidavit pledging to serve only one four-year term if elected.
The affidavit was deposed on Thursday at the High Court in Awka, the Anambra State capital. Nwosu, who hails from Nnewi in Anambra South Senatorial District, shares the same zone with incumbent Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who is seeking re-election.
Anambra follows an informal zoning arrangement that rotates the governorship among its three senatorial districts. Nwosu said his one-term pledge is to ensure the South completes its remaining four-year slot before the rotation moves to Anambra Central.
“I am aware that the office of the Governor of Anambra State rotates among the three senatorial zones — Anambra North, Anambra Central and Anambra South — based on equity, natural justice and good governance,” the affidavit states. “The South has only one term of four years left, after which it will be the turn of Anambra Central to produce a candidate for eight years before it returns to the North.”
Speaking after filing the affidavit, Nwosu said his intention is service, not power. “I came into the race to serve, not to rule. I have publicly made this commitment before and have now legally sealed it before the court. Four years is enough to transform Anambra if there is sincerity of purpose,” he said.
The Anambra governorship election will hold on November 8.
