Elders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State have pledged to deliver at least 1.5 million votes for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
The elders, under the umbrella of the Ondo State APC Elders Movement, made the commitment during a meeting held in Akure on Monday.
90% of Votes for Tinubu
Chairman of the group, Senator Nimbe Farunkanmi, said the elders were determined to mobilise massively ahead of the polls.
“Out of 1.9 million registered voters in Ondo, we will ensure that 1.5 million go out on election day to vote for President Tinubu. Our target is for him to secure 90 per cent of the total votes cast in the state,” he declared.
Farunkanmi explained that similar meetings would be replicated across local governments, wards, and polling units to ensure maximum mobilisation for Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Tackling Voter Apathy
Another elder, Mr. Jamiu Ekungba, said the initiative was aimed at rekindling voter participation in the state.
“Voter apathy has been our greatest challenge. What we want to do now is persuade everyone to come out and vote. We will deliver 1.5 million votes to Tinubu, and it will be real votes, not assumptions,” he said.
Ekungba noted that the party was already working with residents to ensure active participation in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Focus Beyond 2024 Governorship Election
The Ondo State representative at the National Population Commission (NPC), Mrs. Olukemi Iyantan, stressed that while the state was preparing for its November 16, 2024 governorship election, attention was also shifting towards the 2027 general election.
She said the creation of the APC Elders Movement would help unify efforts ahead of the presidential poll.
“With the unity of purpose among our elders, Tinubu’s re-election will be easier to achieve. We will always consult them for guidance to ensure the party remains strong and united,” Iyantan said.
