Operatives of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra State (OCHA Brigade) involved in a shooting that resulted in the death of a pregnant woman and others have been arrested.
The incident occurred during an enforcement exercise at Main Market, Onitsha, when a confrontation between the operatives and traders escalated into gunfire, causing panic among traders and customers.
A market source reported that five people, including a pregnant woman, died, but police stated that only one woman was killed, with four others injured and taken to hospital.
The event has drawn widespread criticism of certain law enforcement personnel recruited by the state government.
In response, the Anambra State Government reiterated its commitment to law, order, and public accountability, describing the operatives involved as acting without authorization. OCHA Brigade leadership confirmed that the individuals had no official approval to carry out the operation.
The Managing Director of OCHA Brigade, Mr Celestine Anere, stated: “The operation was not sanctioned by the agency’s leadership, and such unsanctioned actions violate the clear operational standards of the Brigade. Those involved have been detained and will be handed over to the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) for a full investigation.”
Mr Anere emphasised that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration remains committed to enforcing discipline, restoring order, and maintaining a clean, green, and livable Anambra. He assured that any staff found culpable will face strict sanctions, and all OCHA Brigade operations must fully comply with the law establishing the agency.
