NUPENG Suspends Nationwide Strike Following Agreement With Dangote Refinery

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has announced the suspension of its nationwide strike.

The decision came after an agreement reached on Tuesday with Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals management regarding the disputed issue of workers’ unionisation.

The two-day industrial action led to the temporary closure of several fuel stations across the country. The strike was sparked by allegations that Dangote Group had denied employees the right to join recognised labour unions.

During a conciliation meeting convened by Minister Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, both parties engaged in extensive discussions, culminating in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Abuja.

The MoU states:

“Since workers’ unionisation is a right under existing laws, the management of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals has agreed to allow employees of both Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals who wish to unionize to do so.

The unionisation process will begin immediately and be completed within two weeks (9th–22nd September 2025), and no other union will be established by the employer.

No worker or employee of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals will face victimisation arising from the strike notice.”
