Security personnel at the National Assembly on Tuesday prevented suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from entering the complex, sparking tension between her supporters and security officials.
The Kogi Central lawmaker arrived at the Assembly gate accompanied by prominent activist Aisha Yesufu, rights campaigner Mama P, activist Randy, and a crowd of supporters. When access was denied, Aisha Yesufu stepped forward to question the officers, demanding to know why a public institution like the National Assembly was being closed off to elected representatives and citizens alike. Despite her protests, the security officers remained firm.
Tensions escalated as some supporters of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan shouted and attempted to push past the security blockade. The group eventually marched toward the main building, singing songs in support of the senator.
Throughout the incident, security officials maintained their stance, and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was not permitted to enter the National Assembly premises.
The incident highlights ongoing disputes surrounding the suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and raises questions about access to public institutions during such periods of legislative suspension. No official statement has yet been released by the National Assembly regarding the event.
