The Federal Government is set to hold a special expanded session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) today, Thursday, July 17, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London at the age of 82.
The event, scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, is part of a series of national mourning activities approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to celebrate the legacy of the former leader.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, the session will feature an expanded list of attendees including:
Members of the Federal Executive Council
Leadership of the National Assembly
Members of the Judiciary
Representatives of the Buhari family
The Vice President, Kashim Shettima, is expected to lead a federal delegation to attend the third-day prayer in Daura, Katsina State, earlier today, before the council meeting.
“This FEC session is part of the official mourning programme and will reflect the deep respect and national appreciation for President Buhari’s service to Nigeria,” the statement read.
In addition to today’s events, the Federal Government has announced two interfaith memorial services:
Friday, July 18: Special Muslim prayer session at the National Mosque, Abuja
Sunday, July 20: Christian memorial service at a designated church venue in the capital
Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later returned as a two-term civilian President from 2015 to 2023. His death on Sunday, July 13, 2025, marked the end of an era in Nigerian politics.
