Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR), has passed away in London.
The news was confirmed on Sunday by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, via a post on the social media platform X, stating:
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”
President Buhari, aged 81, served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023 and was earlier the country’s military Head of State between 1983 and 1985. A central figure in Nigerian politics for decades, he was widely known for his firm stance on anti-corruption, efforts to strengthen the nation’s economy, and initiatives aimed at curbing insecurity.
His passing marks the end of an era for a leader whose influence shaped modern Nigeria’s political and economic landscape.
Details of his burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in accordance with Islamic rites.
