The federal government is in talks with the United States to procure 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters.
Nigeria’s Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, led a high-level delegation to the US for a Program Management Review Meeting focused on the acquisition. This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by Nigerian Air Force spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame.
The strategic meeting took place from June 9 to 13 in San Diego, California, and included top US government officials and representatives of Bell Textron, the AH-1Z helicopter manufacturer.
“At the meeting, the Chief of Air Staff conveyed sincere appreciation to the US Government for its enduring partnership,” Ejodame said.
He noted that the acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters would greatly strengthen the combat capabilities, operational effectiveness, and readiness of the Nigerian Air Force.
“We are fully committed to ensuring these platforms are delivered in the shortest possible time. Every necessary step will be taken to facilitate a seamless procurement and integration process,” he added.
Following the review, Air Marshal Abubakar visited Camp Pendleton in California, where he inspected the helicopters and engaged with senior officers of the United States Marine Corps. He met personnel from the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 (HMLA-367) and Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39 (MALS-39), both under Marine Aircraft Group 39.
“These squadrons are responsible for the operation and maintenance of the AH-1Z helicopter,” Ejodame explained.
The visit allowed the Air Chief to gain insights into best practices for operating, sustaining, and supporting the AH-1Z platform. He reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to the effective and responsible deployment of all its air assets in the ongoing fight against terrorism, banditry, and other criminal threats.
“Our goal is to create enduring peace while protecting innocent lives and property, in line with internationally accepted rules of engagement,” he stated.
