A coalition of lawyers and concerned citizens has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of former Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari. The group submitted a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on April 25, 2025, accusing Kyari of misappropriating billions of dollars during his tenure.
Speaking on Tuesday, Barrister Ojonugwa Theophilus, who represented the group, expressed concern that 46 days after submitting the petition, the EFCC had yet to take concrete steps to arrest or prosecute Kyari. The allegations against Kyari include misappropriation of funds, tax evasion, economic sabotage, and abuse of office.
“We are here today as a group of lawyers and concerned Nigerian youths to follow up on our earlier petition… Despite our detailed concerns, little has been done to arrest the ex-NNPCL boss,” Theophilus said. He emphasized that Nigeria belongs to all citizens, and as such, they demand immediate action to prosecute Kyari.
The group appreciated the EFCC’s efforts but stressed the need for diligent prosecution of Kyari. “Nigeria belongs to all of us, and we all have a stake in the growth and development of this country,” Theophilus added, urging the EFCC to take swift action.
