In a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a shipment of psychoactive substances cleverly disguised as green tea, in what officials are calling a highly sophisticated smuggling operation.
The bust was made public on Sunday by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, who shared a video of the intercepted consignment on X (formerly Twitter). The footage shows NDLEA officers unsealing boxes labeled as green tea imports, only to uncover sachets filled with illicit psychoactive substances hidden inside.
“This consignment is a green tea import in packaging and on the outside. But if you drink it, you may lose your mind because the real and undisclosed content is psychoactive substances,” Babafemi wrote in his post, adding the warning “Shine your eyes,” to alert the public to be vigilant.
According to a report by Hobnob News, the deceptive packaging was designed to mimic standard green tea products, a tactic aimed at evading detection by customs and enforcement officials.
While the exact origin and intended destination of the shipment remain undisclosed, the NDLEA confirmed that investigations are currently underway to identify those behind the attempted smuggling and to determine the full scale of the operation. No arrests have been officially confirmed as of the time of reporting.
The seizure highlights the growing sophistication of drug trafficking syndicates and the ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to combat the inflow of illegal substances into the country.
