Niger Government, CAN Mourn Flood Victims in Mokwa, Pledge Swift Relief Efforts

The Niger State Government and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) have extended their heartfelt condolences to the residents of Mokwa Local Government Area, following the recent devastating flood that ravaged several communities.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, expressed deep sorrow on behalf of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and the entire state administration. He offered special condolences to the traditional ruler, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu Shaba, the Nda-lele of Mokwa.

“What happened in Mokwa is a tragedy that affects every heart in Niger State,” Usman stated. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones, and we stand with every man, woman, and child who has suffered in this disaster.”

Usman reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to providing immediate relief and long-term recovery support. He disclosed that Governor Bago had already instructed all relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), along with emergency response teams, to mobilize resources to aid affected communities.

He also urged residents to remain resilient and to partner with government agencies during recovery efforts to ensure Mokwa rises stronger from the crisis.

Similarly, the Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), through its Chairman, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, expressed deep sympathy and spiritual solidarity with the people of Mokwa.

“On behalf of the entire Christendom in the state, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones, and we stand with everyone who has suffered in this disaster,” the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese said.

Bishop Yohanna commended both the state and federal governments for their swift response and called on residents to stay hopeful as recovery operations unfold.

As relief efforts ramp up, both government and faith-based leaders have called for unity, prayers, and proactive collaboration to bring healing and restoration to the flood-hit communities.
