Urgent Concerns Over the Environmental and Public Health Implications of Rubber Factory Operations in the Okhoro Neighbourhood.
Dear Dr. Caesar Iyayi,
We write to respectfully bring to your attention the growing concerns among residents of the Okhoro neighbourhood regarding the persistent offensive smell emanating from the operations of Caesar Engineering Rubber Factory situated within the Okhoro axis of Benin City.
While we recognise and appreciate the importance of industrial development, entrepreneurship, employment generation and your contributions to economic activities within Edo State, it is equally important that industrial operations are conducted in ways that protect the health, safety and environmental well-being of the host community.
Of particular concern is the unpleasant odour associated with the factory’s rubber production processes, which has become a source of discomfort and anxiety to residents living within the surrounding neighbourhood.
Rubber manufacturing and processing may involve chemicals, heating processes and industrial substances capable of releasing fumes, volatile organic compounds and other airborne pollutants, depending on the production methods employed. Exposure to certain emissions may cause respiratory irritation, coughing, headaches, eye and throat irritation, breathing difficulties and aggravation of existing respiratory conditions. The potential long-term implications will depend on the nature, concentration and duration of exposure.
It is therefore necessary that the emissions from your factory undergo independent scientific assessment to determine their composition and possible implications for the health of residents.
Dr. Caesar Iyayi, the fundamental question is this: Must the people of Okhoro endure offensive industrial emissions and possible environmental health risks simply because an industrial enterprise is operating within their neighbourhood?
We strongly believe that industrialisation and community welfare should coexist. The success of any business should also be measured by its commitment to the safety and well-being of the people living around its operational environment.
In view of these concerns, we respectfully appeal to you to:
1. Undertake an immediate environmental assessment of the factory’s production activities.
2. Install or upgrade appropriate industrial air-filtration and emission-control systems.
3. Ensure proper management and disposal of industrial waste.
4. Investigate and eliminate the source of the persistent offensive odour.
5. Engage relevant environmental and public health authorities to conduct independent air-quality assessments.
6. Establish an effective communication channel with residents to address their environmental concerns.
We also call on the Edo State Ministry of Environment, NESREA and other relevant regulatory authorities to independently investigate the situation and ensure full compliance with applicable environmental standards.
OUR APPEAL
Dear Dr. Caesar Iyayi, this appeal should not be interpreted as an attempt to undermine your business or discourage industrial investment. Rather, it is a sincere call for responsible corporate citizenship, environmental accountability and respect for the fundamental right of residents to a safe and healthy environment.
The people of Okhoro deserve to breathe clean air, enjoy their homes and live without the fear of possible health consequences arising from industrial activities around them.
We trust that you will treat this matter with the urgency, sensitivity and responsibility it deserves by taking proactive steps to address the concerns of the community.
Industrial development must not be achieved at the expense of human health. The prosperity of a business should never become the environmental burden of its host community.
Thank you for your anticipated cooperation and commitment to the welfare of the Okhoro community.
Thanks,
Dr. Osahon Aikoriogie Edoimioya.
