Renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has addressed his recent deportation from Saudi Arabia, calling for the Nigerian government to defend its sovereignty and the rights of its citizens.
In an interview with Vanguard, Gumi confirmed the Nigerian government was involved in resolving the matter. “Yes, the Nigerian government is on top of it. Nigeria should stand by her principles as a free nation. Every Nigerian has the freedom of speech, as long as it does not promote violence, discrimination, or ethnic cleansing. One’s views should not be used against them, especially when going for worship,” he said.
Gumi disclosed that key Nigerian officials had reached out to him. “The Minister of External Affairs has already contacted me, and I’ve spoken with the Director General of the DSS. The government is doing the right thing to ensure its citizens are not mistreated,” he added.
He stressed the importance of Nigeria asserting its status globally. “Nigeria must assert her rights as a free nation. We are not anyone’s slaves. This is a message we must send to authoritarian governments: you cannot trample on the rights of Nigerians,” he declared.
When asked if he would consider returning for pilgrimage, Sheikh Gumi affirmed, “Yes, I will go. It’s a place of worship, and there should be no restrictions on religious adherents.”
Gumi was part of a delegation of Islamic scholars sponsored by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). Upon arrival at Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Medina via Umza Air on Saturday night, he was deported immediately.
Despite this incident, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia have traditionally maintained cordial diplomatic ties.
