Abia Police Rescue 12 Children, Arrest Couple Over Illegal Orphanage and Child Trafficking

Police in Abia State have rescued 12 children and arrested a couple accused of running an illegal orphanage involved in child trafficking, according to ABN TV.

On May 19, 2025, around 11:45 a.m., detectives from the Abia State Police Command, acting on credible intelligence, apprehended 49-year-old Blessing Emebo and 42-year-old Sunday Emebo at their apartment on Ikot Ekpene Road in Aba. The suspects were reportedly operating an unregistered motherless babies’ home and were found with 12 children aged between two months and 14 years.

The rescued children, said to be from different villages in Arochukwu, are:

The children have been placed in the care of the Ministry of Women Affairs. Meanwhile, the investigation into the illegal facility continues. The suspects are currently being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Umuahia and will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation.

Police authorities reaffirmed their dedication to fighting crime and urged citizens to stay alert and protect the welfare of children.
