A Sharia Court sitting in the Fagge ‘Yan Alluna area of Kano State has sentenced a young man, Ahmad Sa’id Dandinshe, to 60 strokes of cane for stealing a ram intended for the Eid al-Adha sacrifice.
The incident occurred in the Dabai area of Gwale Local Government Area, where Dandinshe was accused of stealing the ram belonging to one Maryam Hamza, a resident of the community.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution counsel, Barrister Zaharaddin Mustafa, stated that the defendant committed criminal trespass and theft—both offenses under the Kano State Sharia Penal Code. Upon arraignment, Dandinshe pleaded guilty to the charges.
Presiding over the case, Ustaz Umar Lawan Abubakar sentenced the accused to six months imprisonment or a ₦15,000 fine along with 30 strokes of cane for criminal trespass, and an additional six months or ₦15,000 fine with 30 strokes for theft. The corporal punishment was administered within the court premises following the ruling.
The case has stirred reactions across the community, particularly due to its timing close to the religiously significant Eid al-Adha festival.
