“I’ve Found Peace—Not Desperate to Return as Governor”, Says Fubara

Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has declared that he is not desperate to return to his position, stating that “his spirit left the Government House long ago.”

Fubara made this candid revelation on Sunday during a Night of Tributes organised by the Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum in honour of the late statesman, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark. The event, held at Royal House of Grace Church in Port Harcourt, marked Fubara’s first public statement since his suspension by President Bola Tinubu and the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025.

“If I had my way, I wouldn’t want to return,” Fubara said. “But many, including Pa Clark, made sacrifices for me—and I owe it to them to stand firm.”

He cautioned against misinterpreting the solemn gathering as a political rally, responding to earlier politically charged remarks. The governor stressed that the night was meant to honour Chief Clark, not to criticize his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, or the President.

“Today is not about Sim Fubara. Let us not turn this into a political show,” he urged. “Even though I respect the bishop’s message, this is not the time to make declarations. People may wrongly assume I called this meeting to launch an attack on the minister or the President. That’s far from my intent.”

Fubara reflected on the toll the political crisis had taken, stating he now enjoys better health and peace of mind.

“Look at me—I’m better off now. I’ve found peace. That position is not everything. Not every battle is worth fighting,” he said, while calling for focus and restraint.

In a statement from his media aide, Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara urged supporters to avoid inflammatory rhetoric and emulate his path of strategic calm. He emphasized that some actions by allies had not aligned with his vision for peace and reconciliation in the state.

As the tribute service continued, Apostle Zilly Aggrey delivered a homily emphasizing wisdom, unity, and forgiveness, quoting scripture and urging all political actors to pursue peace for the future of Rivers State.

The event saw attendance from several dignitaries including former Governor and Forum Chair Chief Rufus George, ex-Deputy Governor Sir Gabriel Toby, Senator Benneth Birabi, Prof. Steve Azaiki, Ms. Ann Kio Briggs, and Senator John Azuta Mbata. Fubara was also accompanied by a number of political and community leaders who stood in solidarity with him.
