In response to rising insecurity and renewed violence in Benue State, the Chairman of Gwer West Local Government Area, Hon. Ormin Torsar Victor, has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew, effective immediately.
The curfew, which begins daily at 6:30 p.m., applies to all movement into and out of Gwer West. The directive, announced in a statement issued on Sunday, is aimed at curbing the spread of violence and maintaining public safety in the troubled region.
“This directive takes immediate effect,” Chairman Victor stated. “With this Executive directive, people coming into Gwer West LGA and those going out to other places are to do so within the stipulated time of 6:30 p.m.”
The decision follows a string of deadly attacks on Friday, May 9, in the neighboring communities of Ayilamo and Jato-Acka, where at least nine people were killed. Eyewitness reports confirmed that over 20 armed attackers suspected to be herdsmen stormed Jato-Acka, killing six and setting several homes ablaze. The violence later extended to Ayilamo, where three more people — including a Livestock Guard — were murdered.
Victor emphasized that the curfew is a temporary security measure and will be subject to review depending on improvements in the security situation.
Residents are urged to comply with the new directive and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.
