IG Launches Elite-Focused Special Protection Unit, Trains 50 Officers in Niger

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has inaugurated a Special Protection Unit (SPU) within the Nigeria Police Force, specifically created to cater to the growing need for elite security across the country.

Commander of the SPU Base 23 in Minna, CSP Hassan Sani, stated that the unit is tailored to provide specialized protective services to high-profile individuals. He disclosed this during the passing-out ceremony of 50 officers who completed a rigorous two-week training programme. The training included modules on VIP protection, convoy operations, combat formations, firearms handling, martial arts, self-defence, first aid, and firefighting.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State, represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, commended the initiative during the ceremony held at Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi’s premises in Minna. The Governor also announced the donation of 25 new patrol vehicles to the Niger State Police Command to enhance security operations in major towns.

He praised the IGP’s commitment to capacity building in the force and reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to support law enforcement agencies in tackling insecurity throughout the state.
