A student advocacy group, Education for Accelerated Development (EAD), has condemned recent allegations made by Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah against Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, describing them as baseless and politically motivated.
Isah, who claims to be a factional president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), had alleged that Seyi Tinubu abducted and tortured him after he refused to accept a bribe. He also accused Tinubu of orchestrating a violent disruption of the NANS leadership inauguration event in Abuja by deploying thugs to disperse the crowd.
In a strongly worded statement on Friday, EAD National Coordinator, Dr. Abdulkadir Fuad, dismissed Isah’s claims, accusing him of impersonating the NANS presidency and spreading falsehoods for attention.
“To begin with, the man masquerading as NANS President is an impostor and impersonator who goes about seeking cheap relevance in the name of the students’ body,” Dr. Fuad said.
The group also questioned why Isah had not reported the alleged abduction and assault to the police or any relevant law enforcement agency if his claims were genuine.
“The last we checked, the NANS President is Olusola Ladoja, who is the legitimately and legally recognized leader of Nigerian students,” the statement added.
The controversy has further exposed internal divisions within NANS, which has in recent years seen multiple claimants to its leadership.
As of press time, there has been no official response from Seyi Tinubu or his media representatives regarding the allegations.
