Lagos Court Sentences BRT Driver to Death for Murder of Bamise Ayanwola

A Lagos High Court has sentenced Andrew Nice Ominikoron, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, to death by hanging for the brutal murder of 22-year-old fashion designer, Bamise Ayanwola, according to News360 Nigeria.

Justice Sherifat Sonaike delivered the verdict on Friday, May 2, 2025, at the Tafawa Balewa Square division, bringing a dramatic conclusion to a case that triggered national outrage.

Bamise went missing in February 2022 after boarding a BRT bus operated by Ominikoron. Her lifeless body was found days later, sparking public protests and renewed calls for enhanced safety on Nigeria’s public transport systems.

During the trial, the prosecution presented strong evidence linking the driver to the horrific crime. The court determined that the act was premeditated and warranted the maximum penalty.

The case captivated the nation for years and drew attention from human rights advocates, transport unions, and the public. It became a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers women face when traveling alone.
